Start humming your holiday favorites now—Fort Myers’ 19th annual Carol Sing takes place Dec. 10 at the First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second St., Fort Myers. An estimated 5,000-plus people are expected to attend the sing-along event, in which the public is accompanied by the First Presbyterian Church Choir as well as solo musicians and vocalists. There are three performances this year: at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes before performance time.
Admission to the event is two cans of non-perishable food for Community Cooperative Ministries’ Soup Kitchen, which serves almost 1,000 meals a day. Cash donations to CCMI are also welcome. Last year, the Carol Sing brought in almost 6,000 pounds of food to the Soup Kitchen, which was quickly distributed to families in need, says CCMI CEO Sarah Owen.
The Carol Sing is the inspiration of philanthropist and businessman Sam Galloway, Jr., and is sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. In announcing this year’s event, Sam Galloway said, “The need is absolutely critical this year,” noting that the recent economic downturn has “…caused many of our neighbors to ask for food to feed their families for the first time in their lives.”
Donations of canned foods will also be accepted at the Galloway Dealerships on Boy Scout Drive, Fort Myers, and Coconut Point, Estero. For more information, call 332-7687.
Community Cooperative Ministries (CCMI) was incorporated in 1984, and has long been a driving force in the Fort Myers community, providing food to homeless and nearly homeless, as well as emergency groceries and affordable childcare to the working poor. In July of 2006 the agency expanded its mission and outreach to Lee County by merging with agencies that had historically provided home delivered meals to the homebound hungry (Meals on Wheels), and transportation services to the frail elderly (Faith In Action) and The Soup Kitchen. This merger created an agency that is able to provide comprehensive, unduplicated services to the homeless, nearly homeless, homebound, seniors and children more effectively, more efficiently and with greater compassion than at any other time in the former agencies histories.
