In her tremendous effort to feed children and families in Lee County, Sarah Owen, CEO of Community Cooperative Ministries Inc., got a huge award. And I mean huge.

Tyson Foods - the world’s largest provider of chicken, beef and pork - will donate more than 15 tons of chicken to Southwest Florida on Friday in honor of its “Hunger All-Star.”

Sarah, who oversees organizations including the Soup Kitchen and Meals on Wheels, has led a charge to get backpack programs in area schools. This program allows children to take food home for the weekend. The chicken will be delivered to Orange River Elementary School in East Fort Myers because of its significant need. The rest will be donated to Harry Chapin Food Bank.

About 62 percent of children in Lee County receive free or reduced lunches. Many have little to eat on the weekends.

“This chicken could not come at a better time,” Sarah said. “This is the first weekend kids go hungry as the school year starts.”

About CCMI

Community Cooperative Ministries (CCMI) was incorporated in 1984, and has long been a driving force in the Fort Myers community, providing food to homeless and nearly homeless, as well as emergency groceries and affordable childcare to the working poor. In July of 2006 the agency expanded its mission and outreach to Lee County by merging with agencies that had historically provided home delivered meals to the homebound hungry (Meals on Wheels), and transportation services to the frail elderly (Faith In Action) and The Soup Kitchen. This merger created an agency that is able to provide comprehensive, unduplicated services to the homeless, nearly homeless, homebound, seniors and children more effectively, more efficiently and with greater compassion than at any other time in the former agencies histories.
